No Cookies and Milk, Just Prayer

Starting a church where Satan has had control for many years is serious business. Many obstacles
await the daring soul who accepts the challenge of disrupting Satan's stronghold. The church planter is endeavoring to reach a community with the gospel and establish a church that will become a lighthouse to warn wayward souls of the coming judgment. This task is daunting. Only God can perform this miracle.
Serious prayer is needed to undertake such a monumental task. Prayer meetings must be more than
a time of fellowship and enjoying some cookies and milk. Prayer and the Word of God are the only two weapons provided to fight the good fight of faith. God's church is built by men on their knees.
From the beginning of the new church a special weekly prayer time should be established. This
special time should be reserved entirely for prayer with no refreshments provided. Saturday morning is a wonderful time to meet before people start their weekend activities. Some men have mentioned to me that they have a Saturday night prayer meeting. There must be at least one time set aside weekly for men to gather a pray for the power of God.
A country preacher taught me more about prayer than any college class could have done. He asked
me to meet him at six o'clock in the morning for prayer. As a new convert I recall him asking me to pray first. I prayed for a few seconds and then he began to pray. I had never experienced anything like it. He bombarded heaven for the souls of men. I recall he crawled on his hands and knees through the pews of the church begging God to save souls and restore backsliders. The results speak for themselves. Tough country men were converted and I heard them give their testimony with tears of joy. Teens were surrendering to full time Christian work. I remember teens coming forward at the invitation and testifying of God's power and pleading with members to get right with God.
The typical Wednesday night prayer time sounds more like a bulletin board revealing the latest
medical update on everyone from the community. We should pray for the sick, but if we do no more than that we do not understand interceding prayer. "Prayer breaks all bars, dissolves all chains, opens all prisons, and widens all straits by which God's saints have been held." E. M. Bounds The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16
Church planting and church building are serious business. Souls are weighing in the balance. Godly
men must bombard the throne of grace on behalf of lost souls in the community. Without fervent prayer people may attend and buildings may be built, but conversions will be few and changes limited. Only God can produce revival, hence we must humbly seek His power and working. If we want to see mighty wonders of divine power and grace wrought in the place of weakness, failure and disappointment, let us answer God's standing challenge, "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not!" (J. Hudson Taylor)
Milk and cookies are enjoyable to us all. But serious prayer requires serious effort. No cookies or
milk please.
