Make Your Bed

In a commencement address William McRaven, a US Navy Admiral gave a speech telling how the graduates could change the world. His first suggestion to the audience was “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and encourage you to do another task. And by the end of the day that one task will encourage you to complete another task and another. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right you will never be able to do the big things right. And if by chance you have a miserable day you will come home to a bed that is made. A made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”

The admiral’s advice reminds me of the importance for every Christian to start the day with God. A church planter can become so busy that he has no time for God. You must start every day in Bible reading and prayer. Every church planter hopes to change the world by changing his community but if you want to change the world you must begin the day in the Bible and in prayer with God. It may seem like a simple or even a mundane task, however if you begin the day with God there is a good probability that you will stay focused on Him through the day.

If you emphasize the little things in the ministry it is more likely that you will succeed in the big the things. Start the day off by spending time with God. The challenge of the admiral was to change the world but the real change people need is salvation. Start the day off praying for lost souls and spend the day seeking opportunities to witness to them. If the day is difficult you can always take solace in the truth that you did your best to change someone’s life with the gospel. If you are fortunate enough to lead someone to Christ a bad day suddenly becomes a great day.

The work you are doing is the greatest means to change the world for the better. The conversion of a lost soul means a changed life. A drunkard becomes sober and a slothful man becomes productive. A person with no direction soon finds purpose in life. The men, women, boys and girls that you affect are changed for the better because you pointed them to Christ. If you want to change the world win a soul to Christ.

Government and politics are important, but if you want to make a lasting difference seek and pray for revival. Prosperity and the economy are important. But if the economy is great, the world was at peace and people are lost the world is no better off. Win a soul and someone’s life is changed forever and the soul is bound to heaven.

If you want to make a difference in the world and specifically in your community start the day with God. It is God who will change the world and make it better.
